Buttermere

Buttermere — also known as the lake by the dairy pastures —  is a lake in the western corner of the Lake District National Park. It has a village of the same name lying between it and the much larger Crummock Water. Nearby towns include Cockermouth and Keswick.

Owned by the National Trust, Buttermere is 75ft at its depths, 1.25 miles long and 0.25 mile wide. It is 329ft above sea level and is located near the head of the valley of the River Cocker.

Buttermere is a sought after location for walkers due to the abundance of surrounding fells, particularly the summits of Haystacks, High Stile, Robinson, Fleetwith Pike and Grasmoor. There is also a path of 4.5 miles spanning round the perimeter of the lake which begins and ends in the hamlet of Buttermere. It runs through a rock tunnel beneath the locality of Hassness.
