Loweswater is the only lake in the area which drains towards the centre of Lakeland, to Crummock Water, which it was once joined to.

Visitors have described it as one of the more peaceful and tranquil lakes in Cumbria and it is popular with walkers. There is a circular walk which follows the lake shores through Holme Wood which is populated with red squirrels. The waterfall Holme Force, known locally as the grey mare’s tail, can also be found in the wood.

On the shore in Holme Wood is the National Trust camping barn which can be rented out.

Rowing boats can be rented to use on the lake but people are not permitted to take their own boats there.
